In a crucial moment during Saturday’s tightly contested matchup at Fenway Park, New York Yankees rookie outfielder Jasson Dominguez found himself in the spotlight — but not for the right reasons. A costly base running error ended a potential rally and ultimately played a pivotal role in Boston’s 4-3 victory over New York.
A Costly Moment of Confusion
With two outs in the seventh inning and the Yankees already trailing by two runs, Dominguez was on second base. Trent Grisham stepped up to the plate, and as he took a swing and missed for strike two, something strange happened.
Dominguez appeared momentarily distracted or unsure of the situation. Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez quickly capitalized on the lapse in focus, tossing the ball to shortstop Trevor Story, who fired it to third. By that point, Dominguez had made the decision to run — too late — and was tagged out by Marcelo Mayer.
The inning ended immediately, snuffing out what could have been a game-changing rally.
Postgame Reaction from Dominguez
After the game, Dominguez didn’t shy away from responsibility.
“No excuses, I made a mistake,” he told reporters, per the New York Post . “It’s part of learning, and I’ll make sure not to let it happen again.”
Despite his error, Dominguez still had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells also contributed with RBIs.
Strong Pitching Performance from Boston
On the mound, Red Sox starter Hunter Dobbins delivered a masterclass. Over six innings, he held the Yankees scoreless while striking out five batters and allowing just two hits.
“They’re a really good team,” said Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. “They’ve just made a couple pitches or plays or swings in each of those games. All five have been really tight. We got a bunch more to go, so we’ll try to win the one [Sunday] and then keep going.”
Yankees Drop Game, But Season Is Long
Boston improved to 36-36 with the win, while New York fell to 42-27. The Yankees added a run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the earlier setback.
The loss serves as a tough lesson for the young Yankees squad, especially for promising talent like Dominguez. But with plenty of season left, the team remains focused on staying competitive in the AL East.
